Every UK Server connected to a ADSL line (broadband) is on average scanned, probed  and attacked every 2 seconds. Not every scan or attack is successful, but if security procedures and firewalls are not in place, sooner rather then later, one of them will succeed.

Once the access to the server is gained the intruder can steal data, read emails, access accounting data, crash web sites, infect the servers, or if they chose so, destroy the IT system completely. Clever intruders will not leave obvious signs of their visits, so they can come back; unless the server access logs are monitored regularly, most of the time businesses will not notice that the servers have been compromised.
